Welcome to our newsletter

In this newsletter we would like to inform you about our commercial and R&D developments, as usual, together with some news concerning more organizational issues such as Multi-Wafer-Projects, certification and awards.
Moreover, we would like to present a product from a US customer, Onset Inc, and to show that a sensor technology already developed years ago still can be the basis of an innovative product.

Regards,
Henk Leeuwis
Executive Vice-President, Marketing & Sales

Developments in our proprietary optical waveguide platform TriPleX™

CMC Microsystems provides the tools, technologies and services that make microsystems research and development possible in universities across Canada. Faculty members and graduate students depend on CMC’s services to design, manufacture and test microsystems concepts for future applications in industrial sectors. Working with leading suppliers from across Canada and around the world, CMC offers products and services in microelectronics, MEMS, optoelectronics/photonics, microfluidics and embedded software.

Together with CMC Microsystems in Canada LioniX defined an optofluidic process for Multi Project Wafer (MPW) runs, which is currently offered by CMC to their customers. In the optofluidic platform waveguides are used to measure propagation through, or excite (for instance fluorescent) samples in a fluidic channel. Adding optical readout to a fluidic platform will increase its possibilities to new applications and is one of the unique features of the LioniX technology. Since the waveguide technology is transparent over a broad wavelength range (from UV to IR) it is very suitable for a variety of sensing applications. The first devices from this MPW are expected to be finished in a few months.

New product of Onset

Onset Computer Corporation is the world leader in data loggers. Recently, it announced that it has expanded its line of field-proven conductivity data loggers with the new HOBO® U24-002 Conductivity/Salinity data logger. This datalogger is a typical ‘LioniX inside’ product with an innovative electrical conductivity sensor chip based on research at the University of Twente more than 15 years ago!

Results and dissemination of EU Framework Programme (FP) R&D projects

- FP6 Dinamics
On March 31st, the Dinamics Integrated Project on ‘Diagnostic Nanotech and Microtech Sensors’ has been finished. In this project 15 partners have been working on the development of on-site detection of pathogens in the drinking water supply chain. Results of the project have been presented in a special session in conjunction with the Hulst-Expo in Coulogne (Germany) on February 10.
You can find more information on the session at Hulst-Expo Blog.

- FP6 Hibiscus
The Hibiscis project Ultrasensitive Optofluidic DNA Analysis, has already been finished more than one and a half year ago. However, results from this jproject are still published. In the most recent article in
Lab on a Chip, issue 4, 2011 the scientific background of the general information presented in the leaflet is explained in much more detail.

LioniX StarTrix Award

In April, the Lionix StarTrix Award has been handed over to the Purifix team by Arne Leinse. This price of EURO 1000, already for the 6th time, is awarded to the best business plan drafted in the framework of the Advanced Technology Bachelor Course of the University of Twente.

ISO Certification iX-factory GmbH

iX-factory GmbH has successfully passed the audit for the DIN EN ISO 9001:2008 certification. Main goals behind the quality management certification are on one hand to offer optimised and standardised processes to customers and on the other hand to guarantee consistent and constant improvements of several business processes. Further, this specific form of ISO certification focuses – besides various other business areas – on the aspect of customer satisfaction, which perfectly aligns with the company’s corporate philosophy. Dominique Bouwes (CEO) states as quality management representative, “By pursuing this path, iX-factory GmbH proves to be an organisation with services entirely based on profound technological knowhow and high quality standards, which always can be observed and understood by all stakeholders.”
At iX-factory the focus is more on production of micro/nanoproducts and supply of standardized processes, whereas at LioniX the focus is more on new developments and products in the future.
