Also telecommunication functions like DWDM modules and routers are using the unique broadband TriPleX™ properties for small footprint high volume chip manufacturing. In order to make the next step in integrated optics more complex structures need to be developed based on the photonic platform. Based on building blocks in the proprietary TriPleX™ technology complex Very Large Scale Integration VLSI in integrated optics can be realized in a large variety of applications.
LioniX TriPleX™-based technology enables compact integrated waveguide structures which are low loss and transparent over a large wavelength range (from UV to IR). Designs on system level can be made by utilizing developed building blocks in a more complex geometry allowing more complex component design for new applications. Based on this technology LioniX is strategic supplier of this technology to several end users and also an enabling partner in several R&D Projects for low loss photonic (communication) applications.
The low loss properties of the TriPleX™ technology make it suitable for a broad range of applications for various wavelengths.. Two examples in different wavelength regimes are given below.
Microwave Photonic Filters (MPFs) and the optical generation of microwave signals, as two major applications of microwave photonics research, have recently attracted much attention. The TriPleX™ technology enables fabrication of compact beamforming networks for smart antenna arrays.
These Smart Antenna systems are being developed to enable efficient and cost-effective satellitecommunication to spacecraft and airliners. In such systems, optical Beam-Forming Networks based on an all-optical True-Time Delay offer improved bandwidth performance over electronic phase-shifters. The frequency independence of an all-optical True-Time Delay enables a simpler, less expensive control system and improves overall system performance.
LioniX is strategic supplier of this technology to SATRAX and enabling partner in the Point One R&D Project “Broadband satellite communication services on high-speed transport vehicles”.

Visible Light Applications:
The transparency over a large wavelength range (from 400nm to 2.35 µm) makes the TriPleX™ technology very suitable for a variety of applications. The waveguide design can be tailored to a specific spectral window realizing low-loss singlemode waveguides over a large wavelength range. Based on the TriPleX™ technology beam combiners are realized by XiO Photonics for applications in the visible light regime (for instance laser induced fluorescence).
