Space
Lab-on-a-Chip
The potential of biochips for space applications is more and more recognized, especially as tool for analysis in situ for research in astro- and exobiology. Due to their limited dimensions and weight, biochips can be applied as an analysis tool in the ISS and they are highly promising for use in planetary rovers. Other application areas are in space medicines, single cell analysis to support e.g. research on developmental biology or general chemical analysis tools to support experiments and experimentation hardware like Biolab, and Biopack.
Integrated Optics
Due to their high bandwidth, low weight and low damping, components based on integrated optics have a high potential in space sciences. Applications are for example:
- True time delays (TTD's) for broadband phased antenna array systems
- Tunable narrow band filters and spectroscopic imaging systems for heliospheric and space plasma research
- Intrasattelite datacommunication
